KUALA LUMPUR: He began climbing as a young boy, scaling rock cliffs in the area around his home in the south of France.
Alain “Spiderman” Robert has since gone on to loftier heights.
A solo urban climber, Robert has, with just his bare hands and a pair of good climbing shoes, scaled over 100 giant structures around the globe.
He has scaled the Petronas Twin Towers, Taiwan’s Taipei 101, the Eiffel Tower in France, the Empire State building in New York, the Sears Tower in Chicago and many others.
His “career” began at the age of 12. He had forgotten his keys and was locked out of his parents’ eighth-floor apartment.

Instead of waiting for them to return, he simply scaled the exterior wall of his home.
To honour his amazing ability, the Asia Pacific Brands Foundation, a non-profit organization conferred the BrandLaureate World Records Award on the Frenchman yesterday.
The award was presented by Asia Pacific Brands Foundation chief executive officer Datuk K.K. Johan at the Berjaya Times Square Hotel and Convention Centre.
The presentation of the award was in conjunction with The Tun Mahathir-The BrandLaureate Lecture Series where Robert spoke on “Overcoming Your Fear, Climbing Your Way to the Top”.
The award is conferred on individuals who have achieved spectacular success in their areas of specialisation.
His adventures have not been entirely accident free.
In 1982, on one of his climbs, the then 19-year-old was approached by a few students who needed his help to fix a rope on top of a cliff.
He agreed to help and when he was about to rappel down the cliff, he fell 15 meters down, head first.
He landed on his wrist, which was completely smashed. Both his elbows were broken including his pelvis, ankle and skull. He was in a coma for six days.
“My doctor told Replica Franck Muller Watches me that I would never be able to climb again due to my severe injuries. I felt completely destroyed and broken,” he said.
Despite his injuries, he managed to fully recover and even surpass his prior abilities.
“It took me two years to recover and from that moment on I swore to myself that I was going to progress and get even better and reach higher.
“I am still living my dream and loving every moment of it.
“My success is due to high self-motivation and my belief that everyone is responsible for their own destiny.”
In an interview with Bernama, Robert said he had set his sights on his next project – the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa, in Dubai.
The building was officially launched on Jan 4.
“I will do many other climbs in between … I know the people of Dubai, they are interested (in seeing him scale the Burj Khalifa), but I do not know when they will allow me to make that attempt.
“…also the problem in Dubai is the hot weather (of) up to 40 degrees C, it doesn’t seem that I’ll be able to do it … then, I’ll have to do it in another year, maybe in between January and April 2011,” he said.
